Who Can Qualify?
The applicant must present a genuine commercial project for which there is an economic interest or regional need in Germany. The business must be expected to benefit the economy, and its financing must be secured through the applicant's own capital, a loan commitment, or an appropriate combination of funding. Authorities may consider the viability of the idea, the applicant's experience, investment, employment and training effects, innovation, and regional impact.
Investment and Financial Requirements
Germany does not prescribe a universal minimum investment or net-worth amount for this route. The required capital depends on the business model, location, operating costs, and implementation plan. Applicants must also demonstrate that they can support themselves and accompanying family members without relying on public assistance. There is no single nationwide maintenance-fund figure published specifically for this category.
Applicants who have completed age 45 must generally prove adequate retirement provision. The responsible authority determines what evidence is acceptable, so any applicable local benchmark should be checked before submission.
Business Plan and Company Registration
A detailed business plan is a central application document. It should demonstrate the market opportunity, regional demand, financing, operating model, investment, expected revenue, staffing, economic contribution, implementation schedule, and commercial risks.
Viamora can assist with market and industry research, competitor analysis, target-market assessment, business-model development, pricing, sales and marketing strategy, operational planning, staffing, startup costs, investment allocation, financial projections, cash-flow planning, implementation schedules, and supporting commercial documentation.
A German company does not always have to be fully registered before the initial visa application. However, the structure must be credible, required licences must be obtainable, and the business must be properly registered and operated after approval.
A note on AI-generated plans: Generic, inaccurate, unverified, misleading, unrealistic, copied, or non-original AI-generated plans may undermine the credibility of an application and may receive limited weight or be rejected. Any technology-assisted content should be independently researched, verified, customized, and supported by the applicant's actual evidence.
Application Process and Timing
Most applicants begin with a German national visa application through the mission responsible for their country of residence. Online submission may be available through Germany's Consular Services Portal, followed by an in-person appointment for biometrics, original documents, and fee payment. The mission normally coordinates with the foreigners authority at the intended German location, and business or trade chambers may be consulted.
Germany does not publish one guaranteed nationwide processing time for this route. Timing depends on the responsible mission, local authority, business complexity, consultations, and whether further evidence is requested. The national visa fee is generally €90, and the residence permit may cost up to €100.
Family, Long-term Residence and Representation
Eligible family members may use family-reunification procedures, subject to accommodation, insurance, and financial requirements. The initial self-employment permit may be issued for up to three years. A commercial entrepreneur may become eligible to request permanent settlement after three years where the business has developed successfully and the family's livelihood is sustainably secured.
Applicants may self-represent. Germany does not have a Canadian-style immigration consultant licence. Viamora may assist with business planning and administrative preparation, while German legal advice, appeals, and formal legal representation should be provided by an appropriately authorized German legal professional.
